Statement
6/13/08 - IVA Senior Studio Exhibit Spring 2008
I do art to fulfill one goal: to bring satiety upon my appetite for creation and feed my active imagination. As intelligent beings, we have the ability to create many different things using our incredible brain and our highly responsive and agile fingers. Some of us take that for granted but some view it as a gift that enables us to be a deity in our own little imaginative world. When I create, I feel powerful and godlike. The act of creation is a highly addictive activity one can indulge in. It is part of our daily lives and is also a life-changing event for most. As human beings, we are granted the ability to create another human life. Creation of another human is the ultimate form of creation. Even the least creative individuals create something – something more amazing and meticulous than any painting or drawing on the planet: an artwork called the human body. The current series I’m working on reflects on mankind’s desire to create and destroy - the endless pursuit to become an almighty deity.
Graphite is my current tool of creation for various reasons. First, it’s very easy to manipulate. All lines laid down on paper can be erased, smudged, darkened, lightened, lengthened, thickened, and more. Second, it suits me well for my style of precision drawing and can be smudged to create different values. I only use one graphite hardness grade for each piece. I aim for military precision in all my pieces. Third, I thought it would be entertaining to lay down thin lines on gigantic pieces of paper.
Working with a small mark-making tool on a very large surface allows me to push my boundaries further each time. The rush of ecstasy upon completion of a piece is amazing. This creative rush is what I seek each time in my drawings. I eventually get drunk off the creative process and push myself to create even more. The time and effort spent on each drawing makes me become attached to them greatly.
My progenies are not for sale – just their clones. |
